OUR FIRST ANNUAL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP OUTING WAS HELD ON OCTOBER 14TH. UNDER PARTLY SUNNY SKIES AND A WARM 10-15 MPH BREEZE, 28 NGA MEMBERS & GUESTS COMPETED FOR THE 2-FLIGHTS OF CHAMPIONSHIPS. THE FORMAT OF PLAY WAS A 2-MEN TEAM MODIFIED SCRAMBLE. TO KEEP EACH GOLFER INVOLVED IN THE TOURNAMENT, ALL PARTICIPANTS HAD TO USE SIX (6) TEE SHOTS FOR THEIR TEAM. ROYAL OAKS G.C. IN LEBANON HOSTED THE EVENT WITH EVERYTHING SET-UP LIKE IT WAS A P.G.A. EVENT. BEFORE AND AFTER THE CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND A PUTTING COMPETITION WAS CONTESTED. STARTING OFF WITH A 6-FOOT 1ST ROUND PUTT. OF THE 28 GOLFERS COMPETING, ONLY BRIAN O’DONNELL, CURT REGITKO AND DOUGLAS HELLER WERE SUCCESSFUL IN HOLING THAT PUTT. IN THE END, DOUG HELLER WON WITH A TOTAL OF THREE PUTTS FOR ROUND #2. WHICH WON DOUG THE $25.00 PURSE. COMING IN SECOND PLACE WITH FOUR PUTTS WAS BRIAN, AND CURT PLACING THIRD. AT ROYAL OAKS, WE GET FIVE PAR-3 HOLES. WINNING THE PURSE ON THE 117-YARD 11TH WAS TOM BENNETT AFTER HIS TEE SHOT STOPPED 9’8" FOR HIS BIRDIE PUTT. FINALLY ON THE 165-YARD 15TH, PLAYING AGAINST A 15-MPH WIND, TOMMY BOYCE FOUND TIME TO CLIMB OFF THE BACK OF HIS PLAYING PARTNER BOB BUTTS TO HIT HIS TEE SHOT TO 9’11" FROM THE HOLE. ALL FIVE WINNER COLLECTED $25.00 EACH FOR THEIR EFFORTS.

COURSE REVIEW-

TWISTED DUNES G.C.- A NEW UP SCALE GOLF COURSE OPENED THIS YEAR. LOOKS RIGHT OUT OF IRELAND, RIGHT? NOT EVEN CLOSE! ONLY 15 MILES WEST OF ATLANTIC CITY! TWISTED DUNES GC OPENED THIS SUMMER TO HIGH REVIEWS. RECENTLY WE HAD A SMALL PARTY OF NOMAD GOLFERS PLAY THIS CLUB. CONSIDERING THEY ONLY PAID $60. FOR GREEN FEES, THEY LOVED THE COURSE. DURING THE PEAK SEASON, GREEN FEES ARE PRICED BETWEEN $85.00-$100.00. THE COURSE IS IN IMMACULATE CONDITION FOR A NEWLY OPENED COURSE. FESCUE GRASSES LINE EACH HOLE. TRUE AND SMOOTH GREENS, ROLLING FAIRWAYS AND FLAWLESS TEE BOXES ARE THE NORM FOR THIS COURSE. TWISTED DUNES HAS ONE COMMON CHARACTERISTIC THROUGH OUT ITS COURSE, BLIND SHOTS! LOOK FOR AN OUTING HERE SOMETIME IN 2002!

A HOME COURSE FOR THE NGA? DOES THAT MAKE SENSE?

FOR MONTHS WE HAVE HEAR THE MEMBERSHIP, "WE TRAVEL TOO FAR! WHY CAN’T WE GOLF NEAR BY"? WHERE? MIDDLETOWN CC? BENSALEM CC? GET REAL! LETS GO PLAY A GOOD CONDITIONED GOLF COURSE! EVEN IF IT’S 2-HOURS AWAY! THINGS HAVE CHANGED! ISLAND GREEN GC ON RED LION RD HAS OPENED! THIS MID-SCALE COURSE OPENED IN AUGUST TO RAVE REVIEWS. WE MIGHT RE-EVALUATE OUR THOUGHTS ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF ALTERNATING 2002 MONTHLY OUTINGS. ONE MONTH AT ISLAND GREEN GC. THE NEXT MONTH TRAVELING TO AN UP SCALE COURSE. ONLY IF WE CAN GET AN IMPROVED TURN-OUT TO ALL OF THE MONTHLY MEETINGS AND OUTING! MY ONLY THOUGHT HERE IS WITH THE DEFINITION OF A NOMAD(S), NO FIXED RESIDENCE, WILL WE HAVE TO CHANGE THE NAME OF OUR CLUB?

SEE FOR YOUR SELF! GO PLAY A ROUND! 215-677-3500

Golf Tips for the Weekend Golfer

1. Play your tendencies. IF 80% OF YOUR SHOTS FADE OR SLICE, PLAY EACH OF YOUR SHOTS LIKE THEY WILL FADE OR SLICE. IF YOUR APPROACH SHOTS HAVE A TENDENCY OF RUNNING ONTO THE GREEN, PLAY EACH OF YOUR APPROACH SHOTS TO RUN TO THE GREEN. PLAY YOUR TENDENCIES! DON’T EXPERIMENT DURING YOUR ROUND. WORK ON YOUR GAME AT THE PRACTICE RANGE AND NOT DURING YOUR ROUND.

2. Get to the PRACTICE GREEN. PUTTING STROKES APPROXIMATELY ATTRIBUTES FOR 42% OF YOUR STROKES, ALWAYS GET TO THE COURSE EARLY ENOUGH TO GET USE TO THE GREENS. ALWAYS FIND AT LEAST 10-15 MINUTES BEFORE TEEING OFF TO GET A FEEL FOR THE GREENS. PRACTICE 3-4 FOOT PUTTS, SINK 4-5 IN A ROW. THEN WORK YOUR WAY OUT TO THOSE 25-FOOT LAG PUTTS. MOST OF THE PUTTS YOU’LL HAVE WILL BE IN THE 5-15 FOOT RANGE.. GET USE TO MAKING THEM.

3. Visualize your tee shot on the 1st tee! AS YOU ARE ON THE PRACTICE RANGE, ALWAYS FINISH OFF WITH THE CLUB YOU WILL BE USING ON THE FIRST TEE. AFTER HITTING A SOLID SHOT THERE, LEAVE, WALK AWAY TO THE FIRST TEE. GO TO THE TEE BOX WITH A POSITIVE FEELING ABOUT THE CLUB YOU’LL USE IN A FEW MINUTES! THERE'S NOTHING LIKE A GOOD TEE SHOT ON #1.

4 Arrive on time! GET TO THE COURSE 1-HOUR PRIOR TO YOUR TEE TIME. HIT THE PRACTICE RANGE AND PUTTING GREEN. DON’T GO OFF THE FIRST TEE COLD! GO THROUGH YOUR ENTIRE ROUTINE WITH EVERY RANGE BALL YOU HIT.

5. Once a Week! IN OR OUT OF SEASON, PICK UP A GOLF CLUB. GO OUTSIDE OR IN YOUR GARAGE AND TAKE A FEW SWINGS. GET THE PUTTER OUT AND DO SOME PUTTING ON THE LIVING ROOM RUG. IF YOU GO OUTSIDE TO SWING, VISUALIZE YOUR SHOT. GO THROUGH YOUR ENTIRE ROUTINE.

6. I BET! MAKE A BET ON YOUR ROUND OF GOLF. EVEN IF IT’S ONLY FOR A SODA OR BEER. (IT WILL MAKE YOU CONCENTRATE BETTER. IT WILL MAKE YOU MORE AWARE OF YOUR ENTIRE GAME. BET ON THE MOST FAIRWAYS HIT OFF THE TEE, FEWEST PUTTS, GREENS IN REGULATION. HAVE SOME FUN, AND FREE DRINKS?
